This is NOT a promotional video. I pay for all of my flights and hotels (and I always tell you how much!) so I can be as honest and impartial as possible. I do not receive any special treatment that wouldn’t otherwise be publicly accessible, in fact, the hotels and airlines have no idea about my visit and that’s the way I like it!

Hi there and welcome to Singapore’s Changi airport in the far east of the country. I just landed a few minutes ago on a short hop from Saigon and my next flight- the second of four to get me to Mexico is on Singapore Airlines in their Long Haul economy product to Tokyo Haneda.
My flight landed in Terminal 3 and that’s also where my next one will take off, which was very convenient. Either way though, Changi is pretty easy to get around. The airport is split into four terminals. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are connected airside so you can easily walk from one to the other-
There are also some airtrains to help you get around a bit quicker. If you need to get to terminal 4 though, you’ll need to take a shuttle bus. Just follow the signs, there are lots of them. Later tonight we would be taking off from the Terminal 3’s A Gates.
Before we explore a bit more and head up to the lounge, let me welcome you to the channel if you’re new here. My name is Kevin and I am the Flip Flop Traveller. I’m here to give you honest content about flights, hotels and trains and cruises.
I paid for this trip out of pocket and the price I paid is in the description below. Singapore Airlines had no knowledge I’d be filming today and I didn’t receive any compensation from them. Everything in this video is my personal opinion based on my unique experience. The rest, I’ll let speak for itself.
Let’s get into it. I’ll speak briefly in the ANA video about how I found this fare, but I should really stress, it has more to do with luck and good timing than anything else. These first three flights, two in Economy on Singapore Airlines or SQ and then the third
From Tokyo to New York on ANA in their First Class Suite cost me just 55000 AMEX membership rewards points plus around $100 in taxes and fees via Avianca’s Lifemiles. By most metrics, that’s around half of what it would normally cost, if you could even find that first class flight available for reward tickets.
At the time of these flights I was Star Alliance Gold but that doesn’t give access to SQ’s Silver Kris Business Class lounge. SQ is one of the few airlines out there who segregate their lounges based on elite status and class of service.
For Star Alliance Gold members flying in economy, they have the Kris Flyer Gold lounge which honestly, is still a fantastic lounge. Completely remodeled and reopened after Covid restrictions were all lifted, it is a large and open space with a variety of seating areas.
Where you first walk in there are some shared seating areas with plenty of space for charging devices and then it leads into the primary seating area and the buffet. Past the buffet and around the corner the seating areas continue.
I had a few hours in between flights and this is actually where I matched all of the soundtracks for my recent India videos. Funny the details you remember. The buffet here was smaller in scale than the business class lounge, but the food was
No different and I wouldn’t be surprised if the same dishes were on offer over there. As we soon head to the gate it’s a good time to speak about how Japan and the 777s fit into SQ’s network. The Tokyo Haneda flights only started for SQ in 2010 when they launched double daily
Flights in addition to their existing Narita services. Currently, they have three daily to Haneda and two to Narita giving SQ a good chunk of the 13 total daily flights to Tokyo. SQ also serves Fukuoka, Osaka Kansai, Nagoya and Sapporo for a total of 11 daily flights from Singapore to Japan.
This is in addition to the one continuing service that SQ has between Narita and LAX. SQ deploys a variety of aircraft to Tokyo, so I’d caution you to always pay close attention when booking. They are not known for last minute aircraft swaps, so you’ll likely get what you book.
The reason I mention this is since they do also fly their regionally configured 787-10s to Tokyo for some reason. Our flight tonight though would be on a 777-300ER of which SQ currently has 26 of all in the same configuration with four First Class, 48 Business, 28 Premium Economy and 184 Economy.
I should note that SQ is one of the few dwindling number of carriers which still has their 777s in a 3-3-3 configuration in Economy. In order to get this ANA flight, I would have happily flown packed in a suitcase in the
Cargo bay, but I’m very thankful for the 3-3-3 because normally, I wouldn’t be booking a 3-4-3 configured six hour flight. At one point, SQ was the largest operator of 777s in the world at their peak of 58 frames in 2005- but Emirates has since nearly tripled that.
SQ began flying the 777-200ERs in 1997 and these 300ERs in 2006. Our aircraft today was one of the first they received. In addition to Japan, SQ of course has an extensive network covering or at least touching five continents, with nearly 80 international destinations.
All flights from Terminals 1, 2, and 3 have security at each gate and once inside the seating area is split up into boarding groups- a newer development which I appreciate. Boarding began around 10 minutes late but was more or less quick and orderly.
As we board, let’s take a look at today’s flight stats. Here’s your friendly reminder to click that like button, subscribe to the channel and share this video with friends and family. Those are truly the easiest ways- all free for you- to help the channel grow.
If you’d like to support me further my Patreon is linked in the description below. Thanks very much in advance. Passing through business and then a smart looking premium economy we come to the fairly demure powder blue and beige economy cabin.
Soon after making my original booking I paid $60 directly to SQ for one of these extra legroom seats in the first row. Legroom in the regular seats is decent, but for economy flights over 3-4 hours, I like
To be able to get in and out of my seat without disturbing my neighbors so it’s well worth the $60 for me. Each seat has a pillow and blanket on it- neither of which was needed for quite a while
Since it was stiflingly hot on board until at least 30 minutes after take off. You could actually hear everyone fanning themselves with their safety cards. For first row seats the arm rests are immovable slightly reducing seat width since the tray tables are inside.
For the aisle seat only, the monitor is also stowed in between the seats as it’s misaligned with the bulkhead. Each seat had a fully adjustable headrest and it’s own universal outlet and USB port. Legroom is sufficient but not expensive.
Note that the center section of these seats is where the bassinets will be mounted if there are any infants traveling. The safety video began to roll and so did we as we pushed back nearly 30 minutes behind schedule.
If you are looking for the seats with the best views this one definitely isn’t it- so let’s taxi and get this show on the road. We would make our way clear over to the other side of the airport passing by the Terminal 5 construction along the way.
The spool up, take off and airport stats are coming up next. Alright let’s take a look at a couple of comforts on board. The pillow is standard for all economy services on SQ and is a nice plump offering. The blankets they use I’m not a fan of.
They’re fleece and generally just too warm for me to begin with but they just start to look really ratty pretty quickly. Mine is clean, but it could be six months old or 10 years old- we will never know.
In flight entertainment is what brings everyone on the plane together though as we get the same decent assortment back here. Over the past year they have increased their offerings for entertainment though, specifically the movies with around 100 more titles than the year prior.
Both the remote and touch screen are responsive and the in flight map works really well. Dinner service started soon after we reached cruising altitude and we were given a choice of chicken and rice or fish and rice, I went with the former.
The main dish was fine, nothing special but nothing to complain about. Overall combined with everything else though it was a really good meal. In addition to bread and butter we also had cheese and crackers, soba noodles and sauce, a raspberry dessert and a water cup.
I appreciate that there is metal cutlery but I do need to ask, why are they so small. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was my tray table. It wasn’t broken but you know how most of them have a bit of give to them?
Well, that combined with a heavy and slippery meal tray made for a bit of a juggling act and by the end of the meal I would have loved a cup holder of some sort right about here.
After the meal service I had a 2 or 3 hour nap, waking up to a passenger who was not too happy with the bassinet comfort and caught the sun as it just began to give off first light.
It was still a very dark and sleepy cabin at that point though around 90 minutes out. A quick check of the bathroom showed the standard SQ amenities in the counter drawer as well as the super shiny interiors which they have on all of their 777s.
These were kept spotless throughout and from what I could see were checked in between each passenger. Soon enough we were approaching Tokyo from the southwest and luckily I was able to get some beautiful views peeking out from behind the wing. I’ll let you enjoy the approach- airport stats coming up.
If you head down to the description you’ll find my next five videos to come out as well as other bits and pieces like the soundtrack titles featured in this video. On your way down there, don’t forget to subscribe- I release full length videos every Thursday and Saturday.
So overall, it was a perfectly acceptable flight- in the grand scheme of things, above average- but there’s not much to be excited about on these short north south redeyes. Doesn’t matter though, I was just happy to get off and head to the ANA Suite Lounge
For a shower and a bit of downtime and my 4 hour layover. Service as always on SQ was on point, but considering the nature of the flight, I didn’t really see all that much of the crew- which is expected. I really do hope you enjoyed this video today.
If you did, please be sure to click the like button and subscribe with the notification bell on to make sure you don’t miss anything- I publish two full length videos each week. I’ll see you next time from the Hyatt Zilara Resort in Cancun, Mexico.
Oh and as always, thanks for watching until the end.

OMG its bad! SQ needs to pay you more! /s
As usual good video works and nice presentation. Thank you for taking us on your journey.

As an SQ regular, this is the economy seat with my favourite IFE they have, because of the tablet-style remote control. I appreciate having a secondary screen to view flight info off. It’s available on all their 777-300ERs and most long-haul A350s with economy. Also gotta shout out that landing footage, that -300ER wing view will never get old for me ❤. Noticed flaps full came in a bit late, especially for that HND Rwy 22 approach.
Thank you for the review, already looking forward to your ANA review which has no less than 5🩴 in the must watch score! Hope you were able to film the Japanese ground crew bowing and waving the plane goodbye ☺️ For me that already counts as 3 🩴
From all of flight reports I’ve watched, yours are the best ever for me!
Would you ever consider reviewing an Aman?
Always get the port side window seat if you're flying to Tokyo from the south. You'll get a glimpse of Mount Fuji if the weather cooperates.
DXB to CAI on EgyptAir in business 🎉
Thanks for sharing. we were in the same flight in September last year. Dinner was a bit rushed as it was a red eye flight .Overall it was an enjoyable flight .That is the reason we will fly with Singapore Air again on our next trip to Viet Nam in December
Thanks for the info + video!
excellent report, love your naration
I like The economy produkt. Great video ❤

wonder if this will be an unpopular opinion but i'd choose this over sq's a380 as the 2017 economy product is far less superior as compared to this imo.
both legroom and seat design/comfort on them are far below the 2013 ones, wondering why they had to even change from such a good and comfortable seat to a terrible one. oh yeah the organisers are extremely weird too, especially the basket under the IFE is just weird
partly why i'm not a fan of the current ver. sq a380s alongside being a sucker for 77ws
At least now they have free wifi that we can use in the future
Another class act Kevin and appreciate you doing a report on a mid haul Y flight. I have only flown Y in SQ and just in the last couple of years as I am mostly a OW guy. They are perfectly fine but a fair bit overrated. Y food is below Middle East carriers, JAL or TK and leg room is so tight in the newer planes. I am also Star Alliance Gold and agree status lounge is perfectly fine. A big issue with Star Alliance in general is no free seat selection. I am spoiled as OWE.
Any chance we could get a review of AirAsiaX’s ‘business’ class ? Just tried it this January and it’s a fantastic no frills business class – you’re essentially just paying for the bed
Perfectly acceptable 😊
The fanning themselves is a horrible problem typical and unique to singapore airlines. They refuse to turn on the air conditioning during boarding and way into take off.
SQ is good 🎉
Great video as usual. But come on, its time we get a walkthrough of the "Jewel" at Changi from you! 😉
SQ seems fine as usual (although even they can have the occasional slip-ups, no airline is perfect after all, it's just that SQ has less mess up than most other airlines). About the IFE, I think CX offers more content than SQ, so in terms of movies, video games and other entertainment, CX trumps SQ. As for the econ meal, yeah I agree the tray and utensils could be better, but the actually food itself is not bad. In fact, I think SQ offers one of the best econ meals out there, taste and variety-wise. I'm also glad you landed on Haneda. Its a more scenic approach (not to mention more convenient for the passengers, being right next to urban areas), compared to Narita. It can be a pain to get from Narita to Tokyo if you factor in the traffic.
Thank you ✈️
