Shinmoji to Yokosuka. 21-hour ferry trip. Please watch! Hello. Monorail departing from Kokura station. The “Galaxy Express 999” is out of service today. Instead, I’ll look around at the manholes. Some Galaxy Express 999 manholes. This is the south exit of Kokura station. Passing through the station to the north exit.
Manga artist Leiji Matsumoto grew up in Kokura. Here is the Conductor. I can’t help but stop in my tracks. Bus stop in front of the north exit. Take a bus to the ferry terminal. Pedestrian deck connects. Those who wait for us here… Tetsuro and Maetel. Captain Harlock. Down to the ground…
Here’s another Maetel. To the pedestrian deck again. This is the bus stop. Just down the stairs. Bus leaves at 10:10 p.m. 50 minutes, free. Bus arrives. Lots of passengers today. Two buses coming. Let’s look at the route. 11:45 p.m. departure from Shinmoji. East on Pacific Ocean. Arrive in Yokosuka at 9:45 p.m.
21-hour ferry trip. Arrival at terminal. Buses driving away. Terminal building. This is the ferry. In service in 2021, 222.5m in length. “Soleil” Named after the Kitakyushu city flower, the sunflower. “Soleil” is French for “the sun.” Funnel mark combining T and K. T for Tokyo and K for Kyushu. Two rampways aft.
Also in service on Shin Nihonkai Ferry route. Tokyo-Kyushu Ferry and Shin Nihonkai Ferry. Both belong to SHK Line group. Now to the terminal. Embarkation procedures are completed online. If you need receipts, go to the counter. Model of “Soleil.” A very elaborate model. Waiting area is on the 2nd floor.
Tokyo-Kyushu ferry starts in 2021. The terminal is spacious and new. Stores area open for business. Boarding begins. The waiting area has a kids’ corner. There is also a nursing room. Almost all the passengers were on board. I’ll be on board now too. The boarding gate is on the 3rd floor.
To the boarding bridge. Expectations are high for the ferry trip. View to the bow. View to the stern. Connect to ferry. 4th floor, aft side. Calm atmosphere. Long corridor. Walking further. To the 4th floor lobby. Information desk and store. Bypassing the stairs. To the center of the lobby. Benches around the TV.
Stairwell from 4th to 6th floor. 4th floor toward bow. My cabin is “Tourist A.” Booked online for $80. Down the corridor to the end. Large room. Capacity is 22 people. Capsule sleepers side by side. My bed is number 53. Upper bunk bed. This is lower bunk bed. Separate exit for upper and lower.
Effective use of space. Capsule sleeper bed. It is not spacious, but enough for one adult to lie down. Mattress is 15cm thick. Storage space. View to pillow side. View to foot side. Lighting and electrical outlet. USB port also installed. Pillow and pillowcase. Small storage box. Sheets set by themselves. Shelf and vent.
Airflow adjustable. Convenient hook. Roll curtain is secured by magnets. Fully closed. This distance to the next bed. Here’s the life preserver. Exits are staggered across the aisle. Certain privacy in a small space. Large room to corridor. This large room for women only. Again to the 4th floor lobby. See-through elevator.
From 4th to 6th floor. Stairs to 5th floor. There is a sense of openness. Further to the 6th floor. There are many things to see and do. Excellent design. Let’s take a closer look around later. 15 minutes before departure. From the 6th floor lobby. To outside deck. Huge funnel.

Slowly leaving wharf. Detached boarding bridge. Distance to wharf widens. Sailing at midnight. The boarding bridge is somewhat lonely. Ferry slowly moving backward. First a 90-degree change of direction. Bow facing north, turning east. The date has changed. Direction change complete. Ferry begins to move forward. Now the moon is at the bow.
Terminal moving away. Red lighthouse to port. White lighthouse to starboard. Moon on bow. And Orion. Aiming for Yokosuka. Kitakyushu Airport runway. Let’s go back inside the ferry. Passing Himejima Island with a population of 1,500. Funnel in the dark. The trip has just begun. Late at night inside the ferry.
Late sailing time, so bedtime will be late. Back to the cabin. Lights are already out. Are the neighbors still awake? Good night… Outside deck before dawn. About 10 minutes before sunrise. Ferry heads northeast off the coast of Kochi. The moon moves into the southwestern sky. The sea is very calm. Airplane overhead.
Shining eastern sky. Moment of sunrise. Sun’s upper edge on horizon. Sun rises for 2.5 minutes. See uncut. It was a spectacular sunrise. To the grand bath. Sunrise from the open-air bath. Luxurious bathing. The grand baths start at 8:00 a.m. But staff opend early. I’m very lucky. Sea baking through glass.
Back to the outside deck again. Cloudless sky. I want to look at it forever. It would be the same view from the wheelhouse. The sky in the west is blue. Lower sine moon is south-central at dawn. The moon is also bathing in the morning sun. Back inside the ferry. Lights are still out.

And a whistle from “Hamayu.” Just a minute or so. The “Soreiyu” goes to Yokosuka. The “Hamayu” goes to Shinmoji. Sister ships cross paths.

Store opens until 8 p.m. Some onboard facilities I haven’t seen yet. Let’s look around them. Commemorative photo corner. Steering wheel, too. Karaoke room. 1 hour $7. Pet room.
Large dog field. Grand baths also open until 8 p.m. This is the last bath. Ferry goes to Tokyo Bay. Passing a cargo ship. Lights of Yokosuka city. Looking up at the funnel, Jupiter is shining. Pleiades are obliquely below. Sarushima Island in the shadow. U.S. military base beyond red lighthouse.

The baths and sauna are so luxurious.
The washing machines and dryers are so CHEAP!!!
Can you wear a bathing suit in the outside spa pool?
The souvenir t shirts looked classy
Congratulations. You have nearly 50,000 subscribers. 🎉🎉🎉
😮😊 yes it was a spectacular sunrise
The second evening set meal looks stunning. Japanese food is edible art. The price is amazingly cheap for the quality and artistry.
Saru shima? Monkey Island???🐵🐒🦍🦧♨️🌉🌅⛩️⛴️
$3 for a 30 min train ride to Yokohama Eki is CHEAP!!!
Nice!!!!
what sir do you mean by barrier free? 0h and that sunrise was AMAZING. Thank you for showing the whole thing.
Great trip. Departing at late night, and arriving also at night, and yeah no intermediate stop in between so it's require much fuel and more truck cargo onboard.
Thanks for covering the ferry, can't wait to take it next year!
I could never do a capsule bunk. I snore very loudly and would be embarrassed and feel badly about disturbing other people.
Thank you so much for showing me the sunrise 🌅 and sunset 🌇 ❤
A very modern almost futuristic minimalism which anyways is beautiful, I would love to travel with it!!!🚢🚢🚢🚢🛳
I'd love to go on a ferry journey in japan but I'm always concerned about the language barrier, I know no japanese whatsoever so that'll probably be an issue.

Nice ferry journey looks relaxing and you had good weather
With the cheap beds they like to use the cheapest bedding not even bothered to make the beds. What a way to make you feel special. 😊
