Ridesharing will start in April 2024. Hi, I’m Samurai Junjiro, born and raised in Japan. We’ll introduce the latest information on ridesharing in Japan. In addition to that, we’ll also explain how to use taxi apps now available and tips on riding affordably, so don’t miss it!

This video will be useful for your travels in Japan, so please watch until the end! Now, let’s get started! In December 2023, it was decided to introduce ridesharing in Japan. It will be available with conditions starting from April 2024. Before we explain that, we will introduce the currently available taxi apps.

There are many taxi apps that can be used in Japan.  When using Uber or Didi in Japan, you can only call for taxis.  The taxi app with the widest coverage area and the most users is GO.  Previously, it wasn’t possible to use it  without a Japanese mobile phone number,

But since November 2023, it also supports phone numbers from countries other than Japan.  This app is very useful, so it’s recommended to download it.  Signing up is very easy. Just enter your name, gender, and date of birth. There is a coupon code, so feel free to use it.

It’s a discount coupon worth a total of 2,000 yen that allows a 500 yen discount per ride. Once you enter your credit card information, it’s completed. Now, you can call a taxi. When using this app to call a taxi,

There is an additional charge of around 400 yen for the app fee added to the fare. Some areas might offer the app fee for free, but if you use it in popular tourist spots like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, there is a charge. It’s very easy to use.

Once you enter your destination, you’ll get an approximate fare. You can choose the vehicle type. You can also select a taxi company, but it doesn’t make much difference in price, so it’s fine if you don’t. You can also fix the fare before riding,

But it’s often higher with a pre-fixed fare compared to the meter fare, so we wouldn’t recommend it. Japanese taxis rarely charge exorbitant fares, so you don’t need to worry. By the way, if the airport is the departure or arrival point,

There might be a special, cheaper fare applied, so it’s better to fix the fare in advance. It’s often about 30% to 40% cheaper, so don’t forget to take advantage of it. You can book a taxi using this app for a fee.

The reservation fee varies depending on the area and crowdedness, ranging from 370 yen to 980 yen. In Kyoto, there is often a line at bus stops and taxi stands, so it’s very convenient to book in advance.  You enter your destination in advance, so there is no need for conversation with the driver.

It’s easy to use even for those visiting Japan for the first time.  After riding in a taxi, the fare is charged to your credit card.  You can smoothly make payments because there is no need to use cash. GO is an essential app for traveling in Japan. Now, let’s get back to the ridesharing information.

In Japan, the number of taxi drivers has decreased by about 60,000 compared to 2019 due to the impact of the declining birthrate and aging population. Additionally, with the increase in international tourists, it was decided that ridesharing services will start in April 2024.

Because of accidents, drunk driving, and assaults in countries where ridesharing has been allowed, Japan plans to start with limited areas and busy times as an experimental introduction.  After that, the detailed operational procedure  for ridesharing will be decided by June 2024.

It hasn’t been decided yet which apps, like Uber in the US, Didi in China, and GO in Japan, will be available for use. Once the details and app are decided, we’ll share more information, so please subscribe to this channel and stay tuned! We share useful information for traveling in Japan on our channel.

If there is a place of interest or information you’d like to know, we’ll make a video about it, so let us know in the comments! Well, that’s it for today! See you in the next video!

  5. Great video! If my hotel is in Ginza and I have a family of 4, is it cheaper to take the narita express or book a taxi through GO app from Narita airport?
