Tour of Sendai’s Yokocho (alley) Walking along the small streets with the scent of the “Showa” era. I strolled around Sendai city center on a weekday, but I thought that even if I went around normally… This time, I walked along side streets and small alleys instead of the main streets.
The course I walked this time, which also served as exercise, took me from International Center Station on the Tozai Subway Line to Nishi Park, Jozenji Street, Ichibancho Shopping Street, Chuo Shopping Street, and then to Sendai Station.
*Although not included in the video, we also walked around Nishikicho Park and Kotodai Park, and finished at the ruins of Sendai Castle. I was quite tired. This will be a video of the “side streets” and “alleyways” that we stopped by along the way.
It was weekday, daytime, so most of the stores were open before opening, but some of the main eating and drinking establishments were open for lunch. Please enjoy the long-established stores with a Showa-era atmosphere and the unique atmosphere of the street.
*Sendai because the current location of the shopping district was scorched by a major air raid, Although some remnants of the Sendai clan remain at the address, most of the buildings are from the postwar period.
Ichibancho was a town where samurai lived during the time of the Sendai clan, so it was written “Ichibancho”. (The Chinese characters are different from those used today.) The change to a shopping district began when Toyosaburo Yamaya, an important retainer of the Sendai clan, opened his mansion to needy samurai and allowed them to do business.
Sendai Mitsukoshi, which celebrated its 90th anniversary last year Ichibancho 4-chome Shopping Street (Ichibancho Shopping Park) differs from other shopping streets in that it has a bright, open-air arcade (the longest at 377 meters). This shopping street is connected to Jozenji-dori Avenue, where many events are held, and Kotodai Park Civic Plaza.
There were so many fashion items such as glasses, footwear, and jewelry that they were the mainstay of Bambura (strolling around Ichibancho). Various old and new restaurants line Toraya Yokocho (Toraya Alley), which runs perpendicular to the Kokubuncho side of the street, Inari Koji (Inari Alley), which runs parallel to it, and Toichi Ichiba (Higashi Nibancho Market), which runs perpendicular to the Higashi Nibancho side.
Many events such as music events and the “Sendai Bamboo Light” using bamboo used in the Tanabata Festival are also held. Many events are also held. You will see “Soba no Kanda Toichi-ya”. You can access “Toichi Ichiba” from here.
An old-fashioned shopping street in Ichibancho 4-chome that started from barracks in 1946. It was reconstructed with reinforced concrete in 1956. In addition to restaurants, the East First Market is home to antique shops, figure stores, indigo dyeing stores, pet stores, and stores specializing in tacos.
There are “Ichijo-dori” and “Nijo-dori,” and this is “Nijo-dori. I forgot to photograph “Ichijyo-dori. On the far right side of the street is the location where the movie “The Last Letter” was filmed.
It is a parallel street between Higashi-Ichibancho Street and Kokubuncho Street, which was created as part of the postwar reconstruction and rezoning process. It is called “Inari Koji” (Inari alley) because there was an Inari shrine in the middle of the street.
It is said to be enshrined as a “guardian deity of fire prevention” since the fire was extinguished in the vicinity of the Inari-san during the Toraya Yokocho fire that broke out just beyond here in 1948. Toyokawa Inari, which gave the street its name, can be seen on the left.
“Onshirabatta niri unsoawa ka” (Inari-sama’s words of faith) The name “Sun Mall Ichibancho Shopping Street” comes from the old arcade, which had a full retractable lid and was full of light when open. Aobadori Ichibancho Station on the Sendai Subway Tozai Line is located on the south side of the Ichibancho Shopping Arcade.
Sun Mall Ichibancho Shopping Street is an old shopping street with a cultural flavor, lined with bookstores, music stores, and other stores, including Bunka Kinema, a movie theater that opened in 1924 in Higashi Ichibancho. You will see “Soba no Kanda Toichiya”. You can access “Bunka Yokocho” from here.
Nicknamed “Bunyokocho,” this alley is lined with more than 50 restaurants. The original “Higashi Hyakken Tenjo-gai” was established in 1924, and the following year, an activity photo studio “Bunka Kinema” was built there, hence the name “Bunka Yokocho.
In Sendai, which had been burnt to the ground, stalls began to line the streets in front of the station and in Ichibancho, and eventually a market was formed. In August 1946, the Central Public Market, the predecessor of today’s Ichi-Ni-San Yokocho, was established.
The signs that show the specialties of the sake and the enameled signs that add to the atmosphere. The roofed side streets are fun to walk through because of the many postings in the stores. The covered side streets are fun to walk around and look at, with lots of postings in the stores.
Because it is lunch time, a delicious aroma wafts through the air. This side street with its rich Showa-era atmosphere has also been used as a location for music videos and movies. This is Akebono, a long-established eel restaurant in Yokocho, established 155 years ago, but they closed their restaurant last year.
Well water washing area. This area was decorated with photos of side streets in other regions. There is a social networking site for Yokocho, where you can find various information such as store introductions, etc. (There was also a store map from 30 years ago).
Bar “Rumble Seat” is a specialty restaurant with a nostalgic appearance. We hope you enjoyed it. See you later ( ^_^)/~~~~
