Kanabiki Falls is on Japan’s Top 100 Waterfall list and after visiting I can see why. The falls are majestic, 40 meters tall at their highest point, flowing down through the tranquil forest canopy and through moss covered rocks as the water flows down to the Sea of Japan a few kilometers away in Miyazu – Northern Kyoto Prefecture.

I stopped here on my way to Amanohashidate and Ine, which puts the falls somewhat on the tourist map as those to locations can be quiet popular in the summer. But now it’s late-January, and there aren’t any other visitors, making for a very quiet – but somehow energizing – experience. We start our walk in a quiet neighborhood at the base of the falls, and walk by a few traditional and older houses, a small shrine, and then up the stairs to the falls.

It is a relaxing walk with flowing water and nature sounds, which might be nice for study and sleep.
