Having trouble deciding whether to include PuraĀ  Besakih in your Bali itinerary after readingĀ Ā  all those negative reviews? Well, you’ve come toĀ  the right video. We’ll show you one easy way toĀ Ā  steer clear of those local touts. Years back,Ā  the local drivers used to refuse to take youĀ Ā

To Pura Besakih Temple. Why? Because there wereĀ  tons of local touts and scammers lurking around,Ā Ā  just waiting to snatch your money in the mostĀ  aggressive way possible. If you didn’t fork overĀ Ā  the cash, these touts would stick to you likeĀ  glue and get all up in your face. No wonder weĀ Ā

Avoided this place for the past 7 years wheneverĀ  we hit up Bali. But, you know what? This time, weĀ Ā  decided to throw caution to the wind and give thisĀ  awesome temple a shot. Are things still as bad asĀ Ā

Those nasty comments said? Let’s find it out! Pura Besakih is located at the foothills ofĀ Ā  Mount Agung in the east of Bali. It is the largestĀ  Hindu temple complex in Bali. It is revered by theĀ Ā  locals as the Mother Temple because of its longĀ  history and sacred status. After we got there,Ā Ā

Ketut, our driver, parked the car in the carĀ  park and joined us in the temple. Suddenly,Ā Ā  he transformed from a driver into a tour guide!Ā  For the Balinese, going to Besakih’s templeĀ Ā  sanctuaries is like a special pilgrimage, so he’dĀ  throw on his sarong and hat to show respect. GrabĀ Ā

Tickets at the entrance before going in; theĀ  entrance fee is 60,000 Rupiah per person. ThisĀ Ā  covers entry, a tour guide, sarong rental, andĀ  a shuttle bus to the temple entrance and theĀ Ā  beginning of the temple complex. Since Ketut isĀ  with us, we don’t need their guide. We can stillĀ Ā

Spot some local girls carrying religiousĀ  offerings and postcards, trying to sellĀ Ā  them to tourists. Just act uninterested,Ā  and they won’t bother you any further.Ā Ā  Everything has been going smoothly so far. Besakih is considered to be the biggestĀ Ā  and holiest of Bali’s temples. Its highĀ  location offers spectacular countrysideĀ Ā

Views with rice paddies, hills, mountains, andĀ  streams. Exploring the whole site can take 2Ā Ā  hours. Brace yourself for a bit of stair-masterĀ  action because there’s a bunch of steps. Oh,Ā Ā  and heads up – there’s zero shade, so grab yourĀ  umbrella or hat and slather on that sunscreen.Ā

Pura Besakih welcomes devotees from allĀ  castes—it’s the only temple that does so. TheĀ Ā  three main temples in Besakih are dedicated to theĀ  Hindu trinity. While you can explore many smallerĀ Ā  temples in Pura Besakih, keep in mind that someĀ  inner courtyards are reserved for pilgrims. Also,Ā Ā

It’s worth noting that ladies on their periodĀ  aren’t allowed to enter Besakih Temple.Ā  The day we visited wasn’t too crowded, and theĀ  walk was nice and peaceful. We could fully immerseĀ Ā  ourselves in this sacred atmosphere. Ketut sharedĀ  lots of their religious rituals, answered all ourĀ Ā

Questions, and even helped us take some gorgeousĀ  photos. We didn’t encounter any requests forĀ Ā  donations, and hawkers didn’t keep bothering us,Ā  so I think the bad behavior of nearby villagersĀ Ā  towards tourists has been corrected. We alsoĀ  noticed new shopping areas and toilets aboutĀ Ā

To open; it seems the government has put a lot ofĀ  effort into removing the negative impression ofĀ Ā  Pura Besakih temple and restoring its sacred andĀ  beautiful scenery. Trust us! It’s really worth aĀ Ā  visit! We’ve taken the risk of getting extortedĀ  to give you a glimpse of the current situationĀ Ā

At Pura Besakih temple. We think it’s worth a likeĀ  from you or a quick click on the subscribe button!Ā  Pura Besakih Temple is over on the east sideĀ  of Bali, just about an hour and a half driveĀ Ā  from Ubud Central. If you’re heading there, weĀ  totally recommend grabbing a car with a driverĀ Ā

For the day. Big shoutout to our awesomeĀ  driver, Ketut, for showing us around andĀ Ā  playing tour guide at Pura Besakih. If youĀ  need a reliable, safe, and on-time driver,Ā Ā  peep his contact details in the description below. In the 8th century, a monk from Hindustan got theĀ Ā

Idea to build homes for people while he was inĀ  isolation. Sadly, lots of his followers kickedĀ Ā  the bucket from sickness and accidentsĀ  during the project. When they finished,Ā Ā  they called it ‘Basuki,’ linked to the dragonĀ  god ‘Naga Besukian,’ thought to live in MountĀ Ā

Agung. Over time, it became ‘Besakih.’ They started adding more shrines,Ā Ā  and Pura Besakih became the main temple whenĀ  the Majapahit Empire took over Bali in 1343.Ā Ā  Since then, they’ve fixed up Pura Besakih aĀ  bunch, especially after earthquakes in 1917Ā Ā

And Mount Agung blowing its top in 1963 messedĀ  things up. Somehow, the lava avoided Pura BesakihĀ Ā  – locals believe the gods wanted to flex theirĀ  power without wiping out the whole sacred spot.Ā  There are heaps of temples scattered inĀ  the whole Bali, if you have limited timeĀ Ā

To spend in Bali and don’t know which one toĀ  visit, we have this Bali Temple Bible embeddedĀ Ā  in our Bali travel plan to help you to make theĀ  decision. This ready-to-use travel plan will beĀ Ā  shared for free in the last video of this BaliĀ  trip! Next, we’ll take you to another must-seeĀ Ā

Temple in Bali. If you’re into Balinese carvingĀ  and sculpture, definitely give this video a look!
