Tokyo’s SUICA IC Card Is *BACK!* | Japan SUICA Updates You MUST KNOW!

After MONTHS of the Suica and Passmo being canceled, it looks like Japan’s ICONIC Suica Card is officially back!! Well sort of, let me explain! For anyone that might not know, Tokyo’s Suica and Passmo Cards are the primary method to pay for the trains, buses, and other forms of public transportation in the Tokyo area. However, because of a perfect storm between a massive semiconductor chip shortage and a sharp demand increase from tourists earlier this year, these essential transportation cards were discontinued until spring of 2024. And for a while things looked bleak, as there were only a few options to hold tourists over until the Suica returned. But now, it finally seems like there is some good news to celebrate about, as JR East recently disclosed they are now offering Suica cards again… in a limited capacity that is. After hearing the rumors and unconfirmed reports, I decided to check it out myself. And luckily the good news is true, as I have confirmed it myself! And as every video I have made, I’m going to help you and show exactly how and where to get your very own Suica card for when you visit Japan! Not only that, but I’ll show you every other IC option currently available so your trip is as stress free as possible! Shoutout to PESO for letting me know about this update on their website first! After months of the Suka and pasmo being cancelled it looks like Japan’s iconic Suka card has officially returned well sort of but let me explain for anyone that might not know Tokyo sua and pasmo cars are the primary method to pay for the trains buses and other forms of

Public transportation in the Tokyo area however because of a perfect storm between a massive semiconductor chip shortage and a sharp demand increase from tourists earlier this year these essential trans Transportation cards were discontinued until the spring of 2024 and for a while things looked pretty bleak as there were only a few

Options to hold Taurus over until the sua returned but now there finally seems like there’s some good news to celebrate about as JR East recently disclosed they are now offering sua cards again in a limited capacity that is and after hearing the rumors and unconfirmed reports I decided to check this out for

Myself and luckily the good news is true as I have personally confirmed it and just like every other video I have made I’m going to help you and show you exactly how and where you can get your very own sua card for when you arrive in

Japan not only that but I’ll show you every other IC card option currently available so your trip is as stressfree as possible I wanted to give a quick shout out to peso and my Discord Community as they were the first ones to tip me off about this news if you want

To get more useful tips from him and other experienced Japan Travelers join the Discord Channel where you can ask as many questions as you want all right let’s get this started along with the S car coming back I have some more good news to share with you and that would be

My new business hidden Japan Journeys after years of living in Japan I have gained a wealth of knowledge about how to easily get around and help plan your Japan trip as efficiently as possible if you’re interested contact me in my business email which you’ll find right

Here or check out my website which is located in the description below all right let’s get back to the other good news regarding the WEA cards return before I begin though I want to get this out of the way for all returning visitors to Japan as this has been one

Of the most frequently asked questions if you are a returned tourist to Japan and still have your Suka card from your last visit as long as it’s not older than 10 years it is still good to go so if you have one of these cards from your

Last visit then there is no need to worry because you’re already covered but if you have other friends or family coming along with you and they don’t have their own sua card then keep watching as they are going to need one of their own as well okay now on to the

Newest and most important piece of news how to easily get the new sua cards according to the Jr East website as of December 13th you can pick up your very own sua card at any of the Jr East Travel Center sites at any major Tokyo Station however keep in mind that they

Only sell these cars at the Jr East travel service centers once you find the JRE East Travel Center here is how the process generally Works once you’re inside the service center all you need to do is tell the receptionist that you’re there to purchase a sua card who

Will then write the order on a form which looks like this as of right now there are two different options when it comes to purchasing your sua card one option is to buy one for 1,000 yen and the other option is to buy one at 2,000 Yen however the only real difference

Between the two options is just how much the card will be initially charged with since you are required to pay for a 500 yen deposit on the IC card if you ask for the 1,000 yen deposit you’ll get a card with a 500 yen balance already on

It and if you get the 2,000 Yen option you’ll get a card with the 1500 Yen balance already on it anyways when you finally get to the service desk all you need to do is hand them your form order provide the cash and in only a few

Seconds you’ll have your very own icua card in your hands it really is that simple on top of that they even provide a nice little information slip with your sua card so you know exactly how to use it and how to recharge it and don’t worry I did not keep this card for

Myself with the shortage of swet cards still going on I only bought it to confirm this was true and then I quickly return the card after I was done filming please let me know if you have any more questions about this update or if you have anything to add in the comments

Below okay so while this is all good news I still need to make sure you know every option available to you even though they initially said the welcome sua would be available in light of the sua shortage that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore in some areas so while they

Say the sua card isn’t at risk to run out as of right now that could always be subject to change so let’s get into these alternate options for you to utilize as of right now the TOA card which is nagoya’s version of the sua card is available in Tokyo this card

Essentially functions the exact same as the sua and pasmo card with the only real difference being its design in origin and just like the normal Suka and pasmo card the TOA card will only expire after 10 years of not using it so make sure you keep it if you plan on doing

Multiple trips to Japan the only real downside to the TOA card is as of right now there are only two spots where you can get these carts in Tokyo the first is Tokyo Station at the North yau ticketing area which looks like this and it’s pretty easy to spot the other

Location you can pick up the TOA card is at shinagawa station just look for the north exit of the shinkansen section of shinagawa station which looks like this and you’ll be all set and just like finding these ticket offices acquiring your very own TOA card is just as easy

All you need to do is go inside the ticket office head to the counter with the light blue toy Cas sign hanging overhead and ask for your very own TOA card and that’s pretty much it at the time of this recording the cost for one

TOA card was 2,000 Yen but just like the sua card that was so they could get the 500 yen deposit on the card and then the other 1500 Yen goes towards the balance of the card let me know if you’ve already used this great option in the comment section below there are still

Several other regions throughout the country that have been unaffected by this microchip shortage for example if you Landing in Osaka International Airport then you could easily get the eoka card which is the equivalent of the Suka card for that region and similar to the Suka and pasmo cards any Japanese IC

Card can be used on most Transportation Systems throughout Japan so no matter what area you’re headed to as long as you can get your hands on any of these IC cards you will be able to use Japan’s extensive transportation system no problem however as unlikely as it is

These other IC cards might fall victim to the semiconductor shortage as well so let’s go over just a few more options so we can be on the safe side of things the welcome sua is a type of IC card designed specifically for Taurus this sua card is perfect for t taus as the

Design is very unique and eye-catching making for a great souvenir while there are normally several locations where you can pick up the welcome sua card due to the chip shortage as of right now you are only able to pick this card up at Hana airport these cards used to also be

Available at Narita Airport but because of the strain Supply now they’re only available at Hana airport so for tourists that are arriving at Nita air airport your options are going to be very limited however for the majority of tourists this ultimately won’t be a big deal because you will most likely be

Getting the Narita Express into Tokyo anyways to save time and after arriving in Tokyo you can then get the sua card like I mentioned near the beginning of the video while there are quite a few reasons to get this card as a tourist there is one caveat that you need to

Keep in mind with it being designed for Taurus it will expire 28 days after you first activate that card so if you plan on staying any longer than that you might want to look at other options or you can buy the next option on this list

And simply use it once the welcome sua expires the Paso passport similar to the welcome sua is a special IC card specifically designed for tourist lasting only 28 days from its activation however unlike the welcome sua the Pasa passport not only has some extra benefits to offer but also has more

Areas where you can purchase it making it overall a better option than the welcome sua as of right now with the pasmo passport you can get discounts at select stores and restaurants that are mentioned on their website and although there aren’t a lot of discounts available it is still more than the

Welcome sua which offers no discounts at all and as I just mentioned you can also pick this card up at several locations throughout Tokyo most major stations in Tokyo will offer this IC card but make sure you check the pasmo passport website to find which location is most

Convenient for you if you want more information regarding the pasmo passport check out the link that I provided in the description below which will take you to their official website if you you aren’t a big fan of using physical IC cards and you can use the electronic sua

Card on your iPhone the sua card for iPhone can be found within the Apple Wallet app and is really easy to use all you need to do is go into your Apple wallet select the ad Transit card look for the sua or pasmo option and then add whatever balance you want to your

Electronic sua it will then charge your virtual sua card to that amount and now you can use it as if it was a physical squea card one thing to note is that various users have had different experiences with the virtual squea card stating that it’ll accept only Visa or

Mastercard or other specific cards so make sure you keep that in mind and make sure this option will work for you also another thing to note I kept mentioning the iPhone only for a reason as fellow Android users like me will not be able to use this electronic sua card option

Unless you bought your Android phone in Japan that is so if you’re an Android User like me you’ll just have to find another option on this list to use but at the end of the day it’s not really a big deal as one of these other options

Is surely going to work out for you all right that’s pretty much every option you can use to ensure you get your own IC card when you visit Japan now you are armed with the extra knowledge you need to make sure you have a stress-free trip

In Japan but if you still need my personal help to plan your trip to Japan then feel free to email me in my business email or check out my website in the link below like this video if you found it useful subscribe for more content about Japan and check out my

Affiliate links in the description below for when you plan your next trip to Japan all right that’s going to do it and until next time I’ll see you then

  1. I'm just curious, at what age do children have to have their own IC cards to ride the train? At what age can babies/children can ride for free? My other question is, is the 10 year limit of the card, 10 years from when you last used it? Does it mean I can use the card for more than 10 years if I keep on going back to Japan?

  2. As for Narita Airport. I'm there at the moment and all Suica and Welcome suica cards are sold out. Pasmo is apparently at the skyliner information office though.

  3. If I am not mistaken, SUICA cards are valid as long as it is not more than 10 years from last transaction? I think the same applies to non-SUICA IC cards as well besides TOICA (ICOCA, Passmo, etc)?

  4. aw man i wish this video came out before I went from NRT to Osaka, hoping to still secure an IC card somehow, as Apple Wallet refuses to work with my chase debit card haha

  5. Thank you for the info. A question, I have the sugoca (kyushu IC card) which I purchased on my trip this year when I went to Fukuoka. I'm planning to travel through Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto February 2024, would I be able to use my sugoca in throughout my travels 2024?

  6. You can add suica to your Apple wallet so easy and don’t need these cards.
I have a PASMO but have suica on my Apple wallet.

  7. I'm going to Japan in April: land in Narita and leave from Kansai Airport. Someone can recommend me a card? Because if I take a Suica card in Tokyo, I will not be able to get a refund in Osaka.

  8. Is there a JR center at the Narita airport? And could you share more information about your business in the next video?

  9. We had Suica from an earlier trip but the kids didn't. As we flew into Osaka first we managed to get them Icocas very easily.

  10. For a first time visitor this sounds horrible. 10 hours on an airplane and stuck in airport looking for this or that kiosk that may or may not have an essential system for travel in JP. Worst than finding the one and only one newsstand in LaGuardia in New York to buy a bus-subway transit card years ago.

  11. Does the electronic Suica work everywhere?
Cause if it doesn't work in some stations then i'd need a normal Suica/Pasmo which would kill the purpose.

  12. Legendary advice, as usual!
I don't know why people are freaking out over Suica though haha, given as you said there are so many other types of IC cards!

  13. hmmm,… my relative works for JR East and gave me a card … it always works … but living and traveling in Japan is essentially annoying … at least there was no really strong wind in December this year …

  14. What terrible luck for me I visited Japan during august and couldn’t get hold of Suica however my phone was able to do it

  15. Will there be any problem if I want to buy 2 ic cards at the same time? A friend arrives 8 hours later and wants to save time

  16. Just got my suica in ueno station. Thank you! I didnt see any obvious signs that they were selling suicas again but walking up and asking worked.

  17. In late October, we were able to purchase the Toica card at the JR Ticket Office in Kyoto Station, as well. So, if you happen to be in Kyoto and are in need of an IC card, you might want to check that out.

  18. We have a suica card from 11 years ago…have used it every 2 years or so when we visit Japan. Is it still good? You said as long as your card wasn't more than 10 years old it would still be good? Is it still good as long as you have used it within the last few years? Thanks, can't wait to visit in 10 days…hope the Earthquake did not cause too much devastation – just saw it on the news this morning – terrible!

  19. You can add it to Apple Watches too! It’s not limited to just iPhone. It would be better if Apple’s competitors stopped being cheap and added the hardware to their watches and phones outside Japan to support this.

  20. so besides the 10 years lifespan, why would a visitor be interested in getting a regular suica card when the visitor's option is there with no fees?

  21. IC cards are so convenient. I use it to pay when I go to the conbini, vending machines, ride the train, bus, and taxis. It can function like a debit card…

  22. Are there any cons to having the SUICA on your phone? I thought I’d need a physical card but this seems easier to reload and use!

  23. We got a suica at haneda airport. It says, it is only for 1 month. So is it still not working on a next trip or will it be reactivated?

  24. Great news! Going to Japan in the Spring and I'm hoping I'll be able to get one from the machine with my name on it as a souvenir!

  25. I love using Suica on the iPhone version. I can top it up whenever I want when the amount goes low—no need to spend time at the ticket machine inserting money to top the physical card up. The rate from Apple Card is reasonable, too! There's no need to be scared of losing the card. Very convenient! The only downside is you've got to be careful of how much you want to top up your card before you leave Japan. So you don't leave a considerable amount of money on your card. I go to Japan about once a year, so it's not a problem because the money I spend will stay on my iPhone until my next trip to Japan.

  26. Japan travel app by navitime has 24 48 and 72hr ticket for 800y 1200y and 1500y respectively. I’m staying in Shinjuku for 3days before going to Hakuba in February apparently I can get on and off trains the whole time I’m there. Do you know of this?

  27. I already have both SUICA and ICOCA from years ago but my question is, is it okay if I put an IC card sticker on it if I don't plan to refund them even if I won't be visiting Japan anymore in the future (maybe I'm too old to travel or something)? Kinda want to leave it as memorable stuff of visiting Japan.

  28. IC cards will no longer be sold at Narita Airport and will only be sold in Tokyo. What are those of us landing at Narita and not staying in Tokyo supposed to do? I'm not getting off the N'Ex in the middle of the night to buy a Suica then have to get the next train to Yokohama!

  29. Getting the Pasmo Passport was pretty quick and simple, especially since it was right there in Haneda when I landed, plus the ticket machines to load more right next to the counter for the IC card.

The only thing is getting it out of my wallet, but that can be fixed with a card holder and lanyard, which is what I saw a lot of people doing if they weren't using their phones or watches.
