Join me on a day trip to Naha, the largest island in Okinawa in Japan.
Arriving on Cunard, Queen Elizabeth for a day’s cruise excursion to this lively Japanese island. Its a popular tourist destination and I spend a couple of hours exploring International Street – the main high street in the city. Full of tourists shops, cafes, bars and restaurants – as well as a bustling covered market.
The high street may not be for everyone – its loud, colourful and brash, but a great opportunity to enjoy the crazy, almost cartoon, Japanese culture of the island.

Hi my name is Tim and today we’re in naha in Okinawa in Japan is the capital of the tropical island group called Okinawa located south of the Japanese mainland we’ve arrived by cruise ship and we’re able to watch traditional Japanese dragon boats practicing in the harbor naha is a political educational and
Economic center of the Okinawa Islands it’s also a popular tourist destination today we’re taking the cruise ship’s shuttle bus to the main entertainment and shopping district in Nahar known as International Street you can also walk from the cruise terminal it takes about 20 minutes and having a look at the main street in
Naha International Street stretches for roughly two kilometers through the downtown of the city and is lined with cafes bars restaurants and shops during our visit the weather was hot and sunny and with the multi-colored buildings and the palm trees the atmosphere felt vibrant and tropical it’s certainly not a quiet place
Everything feels Brash and touristy and exaggerated with its cartoon-like colors the tourist shops are quite an experience in themselves everything is an attack on the eyes and ears if you’re looking for the serenity of Japanese temples and shrines you’re certainly in the wrong place but it’s
Lots of fun to embrace this crazy part of Japanese culture this is the market in naha just off the main High Street you’ll find a covered shopping arcade it’s a maze of tiny Alleyways with much smaller shops and Market stalls it was great to get out of the heat of
The sun it feels a little bit more authentic and less touristy the market was less expensive than the mainstream so you’re more likely to pick up a bargain or take the opportunity to try one of the local Delicacies if you’re feeling really adventurous why not try some Okinawan snake wine
Back out on the street it was time for us to get our shuttle bus and return to the ship we just had a couple of hours exploring the downtown part of the city but if you want to go further afield there are other sightseeing opportunities on the island
