Geisha Street (Hanamikoji 花见小路), Kyoto, Japan



Hanamikoji (literally flower encountering path), aka, Geisha street in Kyoto, runs for just over a kilometer in the heart of Gion District of Kyoto, which is famous for its Geisha culture.

Lining along Hanamikoji, a small cobbled road, are traditional Japanese wooden townhouses. Behind the facades, protected from outside gazes by wooden trellises and curved bamboo barriers, hide tea houses, many being invitation-only establishments, among them are ones in business for more than three hundred years catering to powerful political and social figures. At nightfall, geishas can sometime be spotted leaving such a venue; Her appearance is as magical as it is furtive…
