Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖, Shikotsu-ko) is a caldera lake and is located in Chitose, Hokkaidō, Japan. It is a section of the National forest of Shikotsu-Toya. A caldera is a large opening that like a cauldron and appears soon after a volcano erupts and releases its magma chamber. It is the second largest caldera lake in Japan, only to be surpassed by Lake Kussharo, and ranks eighth in terms of surface area.
Transport: Along the lake’s southern side, National Highway 276 links Tomakomai and Date. The lake’s northern and eastern regions are connected to Sapporo by Highway 453. The lake is accessible from Chitose by city bus routes. Shikotsu-ko is connected to Chitose Station and New Chitose Airport by Hokkaido Chuo Bus. There’s also a bus from Sapporo Terminal throughout the summer. There will be no longer be a bus service between the lake and Tomakomai.
