I number of commenters recently have mentioned how moving to the Philippines or Thailand would be a better idea than moving to Mexico because dollars stretch further in SE Asia. However, I’ve been to Thailand and I will never forget being on an airplane for nearly 24 hours (including a Tokyo layover.) SE Asia is an amazing place to visit, but it’s really far from the US and Canada.
There are 161 direct flights each day from the US to Mexico – and zero direct flights to Thailand.
If you still have family obligations (or just a desire to visit often) then Mexico is a much more convenient location.

An idea for a future video. Dying in Mexico. We are on a sailboat in Barra de Navidad. On US Thanksgiving Day 2023, an 88 year old woman died on a sailboat on our dock. Some things were much easier than when my mom passed away in WA (2017), but some things were very different and complicated once the police were notified. Had she died in a Mexican hospital with a hospital doctor signing the death certificate, things would have been simplified. The woman refused to get off her boat to go to a hospital. Luckily, I have a girlfriend who is a Mexican lawyer, so we were prepared for what would ensue. The cost for cremation was much more affordable here in Mexico, and her family had her ashes back within 48 hours. This woman’s family did not need the special paperwork to carry the ashes across the MX/US border, but another friend whose mom wanted her ashes taken back to France had to go through a lot between the funeral home and the French Embassy. Anyway, why not pleasant, expat retirees do pass away once they retire outside the US.
Oh c'mon. Who do you think you are kidding? Admit it, Asia isn't famous for Margaritas. Singapore Slings maybe. Seriously.. We've worked it out and since Florida is definitely off any of our lists and the only other warm and drivable location is Mexico. So…… P n D
Yeah!!! You’re not wearing that ugly old icky cowboy hat! Thank goodness you have a new cap.
To each their own, pal.
I live in Canada rite now with my Philippine wife, and I'm from the U.K. For well over 25yrs we've been Canadian citizens, however we've visited the Phil & U.K. a number of times, and as we age it becomes harder to handle those 14 hr flights. Now we've reached retirement, Medicare comes into ply and because of that alone. The Phil, U.K & the U.S is "No country for old men" & women for that matter, and one more reason amongst many why were moving to Mexico. So thank you for your important video piece. 🤠👍
Morelia, Michoacán has the best weather all year round. More like the Coast of Monterey, CA next to the beach where I live but very expensive.
Being connected to the USA makes many things easier. Congrats on going to a wedding, I'm older and doing the funeral thing way to often now.
I am in La Paz now and LOVE IT! I have never been to Thailand but l seriously doubt it could be more laid back than Mexico. vive Mexico!
MX has greater variety of climate than SE Asia.
Also, SE Asia is brutally hot and humid year round. I wouldn’t be able to cope.
But then where would all the sexpats go? Lol jk
I LOVE your channel! You are warm and open. We are in Mexico now for 7 months, live in Bend, Oregon not far from you. We split our time between Oaxaca and Lake Chapala. Both SO different and equally rich in what they have to offer. We have been coming to Mexico for over 40 years, just got our Permanent Residency Visas last year in Oaxaca and are gradually making the full time transition down here. Keep up the great work you are doing; I so appreciate it.
Mexicana airlines was purchased by the Mexican Government in January 2023. It is now operated by the Ministry of Defense as Aerolinea del Estado Mexicano. It is not private!
Lots of videos with good information about living in Mexico. I have lived in Costa Rica, Colombia, and now Mexico for over 20 years. There are some negatives to be aware of:
1. Don't travel on highways at night.
2. Don't trust the police. Many are corrupt.
3. Don't display signs of wealth publically.
4. Always have someone watching or staying in your home when you travel.
5. As a gringo/a you naturally draw attention. Always be aware of your surroundings.
Learn some basic Spanish. It really helps getting things done and making you feel a part of the community.
Good point! I believe that proximity to the U.S. is a factor for many from there and Canada in moving to Mexico.
Good bless mexico and the mexicans the golden race 🇲🇽 ⭐️⭐️😎⭐️⭐️🇲🇽🎄
so What ? live there in Mexico . daming crimen doon. ingat lang .
This might be a silly question, but how did you record the audio of this video without picking up all of the background noise in the airport?
Im in my early fiftys and seriously thinking about retiring to Mexico, would buying a home be better than renting? Interested in the Puerto vallerta or around that side of that area.
Thanks for featuring my wedding ❤ 👰🏻♀️
