After living in Japan for a year, we travelled to Australia for the first time. It was our first time going to a Western cultured country after living in an Eastern cultured country. So we had some reverse culture shocks for sure!
My list for this video:
How big people are: Height and weight!
So many babies!
Wearing shows indoors!
Big cars!
No konbini!
So much skin!
So many tattoos!
Small Talk/Casual Friendliness!

Who's excited for Thailand next?!?!
What'd you think of my reverse culture shocks? 🙂
Height lol me. Yay congrats. Dont get stuck in a cave lol! What is the average australian height for men? Loss of babies is nothing. Lots of babies is shocking lol. I wonder if my shoes would fit inside the rack things where you put shoes. Also switzerland hut i went to had indoor crocs. Only up to euro 48 uk 13 us 14 so just enough for then. Try canada then lol. 4x4s every house. Is that penny behind you? Are konbinis like newsagents? Lol go to uk. You will see coats and stuff like that unless its dry then probably jumper or very inside stuff. Lmao boobs camera shakes. Did it feel good seeing more tats? Small talk. Eh. Tbh i dont mind. I like the tube because of that and the unexplainable stuff. Lol Yes Joe Stare Right Back At Them. Well. Yes i am a scary foreigner. Sorta recieved shocks in switzerland in the hut i stayed at they had tiny cereal bowls and i was sad.
I would love a video on the population issues
Good video Sonnie, really interesting the differences between the two cultures – some i thought would be there (big/small people), but the babies and boobs made me lol 🙂
You really should try to get to the south of Thailand too around the islands, ie Phuket (and surrounds), Koh Samui etc. Think the movie 'The Beach'
Very beautiful part of the world
I’ve always been interested in Japan’s culture just from watching anime and studio Ghibli and in their entertainment stuff they are very open like in the characters and kind of the opposite of how Japanese people actually are? Lol it’s kind of weird!! Some things about Japan’s culture sounds very refreshing and better than western culture, like how great they are about health and transportation… but then other things like how they are quite cold and unfriendly just sounds really sad??
I would love to see videos on the declining birth rate and on the social rules about clothing! They would both be so interesting!
I'm so excited for your trip to Thailand, my dad and his partner went and loved it and I think you'll have a much more exciting time than they did!
It's so interesting what felt strange again, I find it very funny that two of your points are babies and boobs. I've never really considered how many babies I see day to day, but actually I do see a lot of 0-5 years olds just out and about. It would be strange to be without that.
That being said, from everything I've seen you (and other Japan-based youtubers) talk about, I cannot imagine a culture which better fits my boyfriend – reserved but not unfriendly, not keen on tattoos (like, at all, ever), keen to wear masks to avoid contagion and apologises after sneezing, quiet, never wants to be a bother to anyone ever… we do both dislike wearing shoes though, I generally take my shoes off whenever I can get away with it, so I'd definitely like that aspect of Japanese culture!
I haven't really travelled enough for long periods to get culture shock, the longest I've ever been away for is a month and in that time I mostly found I missed my home culture rather than assimilating (we were travelling between countries so assimilating would have been very very short term). I think the closest I've had is, after spending 3 weeks in Spain to practice the language and stay with an old school friend who moved out there when he was 10, I got back and just totally forgot the English word for milk.
Did you find it comforting (or familiar) to return to Japan after your holiday? Or was it like being reminded of something you were very used to and now you miss it all over again? If you ever really missed it, do you deal a lot with home sickness?
Your giggle is so cute.
I hope Thailand is kind to you . Love you and Joe to bits 😊
(:
You clearly weren't in Sydney as it is full of convenience stores. But glad you enjoyed it in Oz.
10:25 man I ♥ Australia
I like to think your 'armpit test' is where the phrase 'rule of thumb' came from :D. Excited about Thailand yay!
I was three when we moved to Copenhagen, and from what my family tells me yes there were some differences esp years ago. To be invited to someone's home was a big deal, and unless real close friend you do not just show up. People thought it amusing that we barbecued, but it is more common now. Amusing differences in a way that you notice.
Stoked for your next adventure Sonnie 🇹🇭 👍🏻 Keep tabs on Joe 😉 Ladyboy Clubs a plenty, curiosity might get the better of him lol
Culture shocks. After living in London for more than 20 years, every time I go to my country (Portugal) I realise, although much more similar cultures, some differences:
How people talk to each other on public transport. in Portugal if you are on a bus, train, etc. you'll have most of the time people chatting. In London sometimes I feel uneasy with the silence you can have in a crowded carriage and the avoidance of eye contact is really strange.
Small talk, here it's almost annoying how much people talk rubbish for hours on end, if you go to a pub in the happy hour the cacophony is almost unbearable, I miss having really good and deep conversations like we do in Portugal.
The food, the thing I miss the most after friends and family. The quality and especially the variety. The supermarkets herd have so little to offer in comparison.
Politeness, although sometimes what we call shallow politeness, English people are much more friendly and simile much more often than us. There are lots of friendly Portuguese people, especially to tourists, but there are also lots of rude and with rally bad manners.
There are other things but for the moment is what I can recall.
Not using shoes indoors. That's something we do at home and I do at work in winter. It's a great habit because if you think about all the crap that's on the floor outside and if you don't change your shoes when you get home you will spread all that in the place you live.
Can't wait for Thailand…. You and Joe stay safe
Hey Sonnie, I've missed your smile! I also love your laugh! I've been awol for a few months due to the chronic illness we've talked about before. Unfortunately, that means I missed all the videos of your amazing trip. 😢
You know those are my favorite! I'll have to try and catch up. So nice to see you.
Thanks for the insight, Sonnie! I will forever be envious of konbinis. 🍈🍈
Average height of Australian is being depressed by some many Asians moving into Australia.
Jolie fille qui parle, mais désagréable à regarder et à écouter : trop de mimiques, trop d'exclamations, trop américaine j'imagine.
It's not really a reversed culture shock but I was based in a research station without electricity or running water for a few weeks… when I came back to "civilisation" I had to think very hard not to forget that normal toilet flushes 😅
Merry Christmas Sonnie! 😁🌲
今日学んだこと。オーストラリアはおっぱいの国。おっぱいだらけらしい。
Things I learned today. Australia is the country filled with boobs.
Dear Sonnie, I am Dina, a teacher from Russia. My students and I enjoy meeting and talking to people from different countries in Skype. We play Mystery Skype (you know when you need to guess the location of each other by asking yesno questions). But unfortunately we live so far from any English-speaking countries that we've almost never talked to a native english speaking person. Dear Sonnie, I offer you to be our guest in skype and answer some questions about every day life or about your country, city. (of course for free). I watched some of your videos, you travell a lot and talk about the countries very vividly so you will be a very interesting guest for us. We are +7 GMT time zone. If you are interested in my offer, my students and I would be very happy! But thank you in any case, Dina
An American going on about how big Australian cars are is kinda ironic lol. I went to the states and your cars/trucks are absolutely enormous compared to our cars! I was looking at the huge SUVs/Pickups with my mouth open. But yeah, I know the cars in Japan are tiny so I guess it would still be a big change.
Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships😘🤗😁
I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships!
Pls do video on Hague conventions. How Japanese girls , take Australian kids and never return ! Parental child Abduction!! I haven’t seen my daughter for 1 year 3 months , she is in Okayama !
Public transport system is not comparable. SIZE of the country.
sorry, but this Aussie reckons tattoos are not ok (but, yes, it seems every other robot has them – such a pity, and a tragedy if the owner is a pretty girl!).
I'm an Aussie ,loving in Japan for 24 years. Going back to Australia depresses me. It has changed, for the worse. Meth addicts everywhere, the Aussie culture is held in contempt, half the young people want to be rappers or social media influencers. Looks like I'll never be able to live there again. Oh well…
