I loved that part with "It's so cool!" It's from China "I like it 40% less…" I can see the Chinese community getting frustrated that Japanese and Korean soft power is much higher. As a Korean American growing up during 90's before we became cool, I felt the same way about Japanese soft power being so much more prevalent.
China has always had a negative PR image on the world stage for a multitude of obvious reasons. Economic prosperity is only one half of the equation. It's a hard sell when the country is widely perceived to be a quasi-dictatorship. It's like how oil rich Middle Eastern nations are considered pariahs in the West despite their industrial boom. If democratic and socially liberal attitudes don't follow, it won't matter how wealthy a country becomes. Any civilization that wishes to achieve sustained longevity must not actively repress its own populace. Tyrannies always reach a tipping point before they devolve, it's inevitable.
doesnt matter just be cool yourself. original poster is pathetic
Golden Harvest and John Woo movies in the 90's were such a big part of my pop culture growing up
A lot of people already commented about kung fu movies, and I think that's a huge Chinese export that maybe isn't as big as it once was. For my dads generation, Bruce Lee was the biggest star in the world, and I grew up watching things like Enter the Dragon or Jackie Chans Drunken Master. Kung Fu Hustle was MY favorite movie growing up, and it still holds up!
For food, Cantonese food and Sichuan food are as good as any Korean or Japanese foods.
On the flip side, growing up Japanese, I really shied away from things like Manga and anime because they felt too nerdy or fobby. So the grass is always greener…
5:37 In an ancient sense china has preserved its culture.
6:25 Who are those guys?
Fabolous style top 5
Imagine trying to negotiate coolness, that says it all. Who else does this except the Chinese.
Don't worry my Chinese brother I love you.
Panda express is great.
Jpop and kpop not so much.
Honestly being chinese does have negative connotations thanks to you know whom. Politics have infiltrated our daily lives whether we like it or not whether we admit it or not it affects us (its like psychological warfare). I also find it odd japan and korea had a war with you know whom but china didn't maybe you know whom is using that point to fuel their agenda/hate whatever idk
That is quite sad that someone would feel that way. I’ve had some issues with confidence in my past, but even during my darkest days, I never blamed being Chinese for my own ineptitude.
Like you guys said, Chinese are everywhere! We are highly powerful and influential in many of the countries where we have set up operations.
They don’t call us the Asian J**s For nothing!
Come to think of it… perhaps that is why they hate us! 🤔
Chinese have 52 ethnicities of people. Being jealous is saying that 52 of these difffernt ethnicity of people don’t have something cool 🤡
I am SO DISGUSTED by millennial and GenZ stratification of Asian cultures that you guys just accept as unchanging. It won’t change if you don’t change it!! This is RACIST BULLSHIT and you’re just perpetuating it through acceptance. We GenXers never thought this way and how dare you young people think you’ve actually made progress in society?? You’ve all set us back. Shame on you. And this whole discussion was about only THREE cultures. Maybe racist Asians Aren’t the best people to have a channel about Asians if they’re just going to perpetuate this bullshit.
China has a great transit system. Their railroads are great. China has some great movies and dramas. China has a great culture. She should be Chinese and proud and hold her head up.
For a non Chinese biggest brand in entertainment is Jackie Chan and then Jet lee….
Other then that there is not much exposure of Chinese entertainment….
China and Chinese culture was actually one of the world's most admired societies up until the mid 1800s. Nowadays it just has a bad rap because of communism, and cheap "made in China" stuff. Foreigners, Westerners, and even Asians (especially Chinese) really have to study China to appreciate its greatness.
Chinese culture used to be on top. Specifically Hong Kong soft culture. From kung fu to gangster flicks. We were loved by all. Being associated with China now is pretty bad.
korean and japanese pop culture is in many ways also an answer and reaction to their colonial past – much is based on cultural reciprocy (music and movies and series that have a more clear western style of narrative mixed with own japanese korean storytelling ways) – chinas strength and weakness at the same time is that it mostly remains mysterious as well as unopen to the west. its also got enough inhabitants (as buyers and consumers) for its own popculture. it does not "need" to be or get appreciated by the outside. korea and japan are much smaller nations with less people and a clearer leitkultur, they also have minorities, but they have less (china has 55 or so, they all have again THEIR own subculture ancient old cultures&languages) – so similiar to india, mainland china was never that interested in profiling itself culture wise to an outside world, 1st: cuz there s grown complacency as well as 2nd: introspective confucianist shyness or even need to surpress ones emotions to the benefit of the surroundings. that buddhist need to shut up and minimize one s own drama does not look "heroic" or "daring" or "cool" enough to lead a narrative (as in "this is the prototype chinese hero"). in that sense koreans and japanese had louder more visible approaches in their narrative. but in general guys, china is more like a small continent, rather than one nation. its a civilization state masked as a nation state. so comparing "korea" and "japan" to "china" is not really adequate because korea and japan are much smaller size wise and inhabitants wise. that sort of comparison is not getting us anywhere. none is better than the other, each has suffered in its own way and has also contributed to humankind in its own way. some even say there is no "han chinese" at all cuz we are all mixed races. so the girl that was comparing those three countries and their respective popcultures is still young and maybe looking for an own identity- thats deeply human and she will find it with time but not mainly by watching popculture rather than developping her own skillset. the only thing that might make chinese popculture less visible and cool could be due to censorship. and that could at some point also vanish when the older politicians pass away. china in 50 or 100 years will be a different china
I love watching douyin vids. China doesn’t release a lot of their modern culture. I basically have to dig for Chinese content.
What can she do? Easy. She can hit the gym daily & develop a "knockout body". She can improve her makeup & have amazing hair.
In other words she needs to become an ABG. ABG.
As long as the PRC is a geopolitical rival to the US, Chinese culture will never have soft power. I don't think China cares though, they have 1.4 billion citizens to tend to.
softpower is a much harder bubble to grow and maintain than hardpower and can collapse or burst much easier and faster. only a few countries have achieved to establish but even the majority of the 1st world countries don't have this honor. germany for example is the largest economy in europe. but if you ask people around the world about germany typical answers will likely be luxury cars, beer, sausage, oktober fest and nazis. not really softpower.
in the 80s western germany had more softpower than today. "neue deutsche welle" which was similar to korean hallyu wave. but that was a different time and only memories are left
Chinese people have made significant historical and cultural achievements in the past. but I think It seems that their cultural development is being hindered by the CCP and its supporters today. (I am not chine so can I say this?? right?)
chinese have bruce lee wong kar wai and amazingly nuanced chinese cuisuine and we created gunpowder. f**k wanting to be mainstream, we should gatekeep all of it 😂😂😂😂
forget softpower always stay private always gatekeep
Go visit China. Immerse yourself in the Chinese culture and understand more of it.
Chinese american comedians are best.
I noticed that Japanese girls always tended to be the most naturally attractive probably due to Ainu blood cause the Ainu look less Mongolian like
Bruh as an Indonesian I’m jealous of all yall. The only thing people know about us Indos is Bali 😂
I think we got a give China the benefit of the doubt because during the early 20th century China was in so much turmoil it was not in a position to promote its culture while Japan was already making moves to spread its culture around the world. At the same time, and I am not saying this to diss Japan, but there is some stuff that is thought of as Japanese that has its origins in China. From a popular media standpoint, the inspiration for Dragon ball is one of the obvious ones. Another lesser known one is the Kitsune anime trope. China has stories about Kitsune dating back 2000 years and the nine tailed fox originated in China(look up Classic of Mountains and Seas – Jiu Wei hu)
The thing is, the formation and the spread of Korea and Japan’s pop culture is vastly different from each other. When postwar Japan started to become somewhat popular in the 1970s and 1980s, Japanese pop culture in general was extremely inward looking. The only thing Japan was interested in exporting was their automobiles and electronics and its own pop culture such as anime and music was only catered towards Japanese audiences. It was in the mid 1980s during the bubble economy when westerners started to become more interested in the hobbys of the average Japanese people and started adopting them by taking them home to their countries. Japan didn’t initially try to export them, foreigners came to Japan with interest and took them back to spread Japanese pop culture. This is why alot of Japanese pop culture in general has its own aesthetic/flavor because its main target are the native Japanese people and not foreigners. This is also why Japanese media even today don’t care for any social trends and political correctness thats happening in the west.
Korea on the other hand is different. When Korea started to build up their entertainment industry, its initial goal was to spread them overseas. It didn’t bother to cater towards the native Korean people because its main target were overseas. This is why the Korean government invested tons to support Korean Wave in order to spread its influence throughout the world. And in the end, it was a huge success as you could see.
Now with China, which one of these examples are they going to follow? Are they going to go with the Japanese model where it starts off inwards by building up authentic pop culture within China and wait until foreigners picks up on it and eventually let it spread? Or are they going to try the Korean model, where the government purposely “creates” a pop culture on their own and tries to sell them overseas? Honestly, China has the ability to do both. They have a huge domestic population, vast amount of ethnic Chinese living overseas that can act as a “bridge”among countries and also a powerful government enough to promote them overseas by investing tons of money. But you know whats truly holding China back? The lack of freedom among the general population and consumerism of foreign goods. You CAN’T expect to develop a sub culture or a pop culture without the people expressing themselves freely. Sub cultures are born by letting the younger people express themselves to the specific social environment they are in. You have to let those people naturally form their own “clique” or groups to let their expression and aesthetics shape itself. Whenever that stage is cleared without any government involvement to crack them down, let it naturally spread even more throughout the country and wait until you can make profit out of it. China can do this with the enormous amount of population they have. The problem is that the Chinese government is extremely sensitive to any type of social groups forming within the population and will do anything to suppress them if they feel threatened. Hence why the Chinese population has the tendency to depend on foreign pop culture if their own domestic entertainment is not their taste. Honestly if you are a Chinese American, don’t depend on China to form its own “cool” pop culture. It probably wont happen with how the country operates. Its political structure is not suitable for any type of authentic sub cultures to be born. Even if there would to be with the “guidance” of the Chinese government, it most likely wont be authentic to the general Chinese population. Sub cultures has to resonate with the general population, especially the youth. Chinese Americans(or any other Asian Americans) has to form their own identity and sub culture that can be resonated and spread among other Asian Americans.
China is a not an American ally, and is actually hostile towards America. Simple as
Non-Asian here. I have to say I am surprised why any Chinese would be jealous or insecure of Koreans or Japanes. Chinese culture is much cooler IMO. Chinese culture is known all over the world, their food, language, history, martial arts, movies etc etc. In every country in the world China is known, in almost every country in the world Chinese people have set up shop and thrived. China is top culture in Asian IMO.
Communists
I love the goat tears in the comments 😂
I love being chinese
My takeaway learning about China's culture: unfortunately due to CCP getting a lot of press & how Mao changed most of that generations thinking about mostly thinking about money & taking whatever they can has outshined China's good culture
This is similar to Africans where theyre vew as poor people yet theyre culturally rich. A good thing I found interesting was how gymnastic moves orginated from Chinese folk dance
